BreakThrough

About

Breakthrough is a mobile app for fitness enthusiasts who want to get the most out of their workout by scientifically varying the load and intensity of their training over a period of time for maximum result without plateaus through the use of the periodization training method.

What is Periodization?

Periodization is a form of resistance training that may be defined as strategic implementation of specific training phases. These training phases are based upon increasing and decreasing both volume (which is reps times sets) and intensity (which is the load percentage of 1 RM) when designing a training program.

A Scientific Way

Most fitness apps can generate a workout routine, but virtually no apps are designed to prevent plateaus and ensure steady progress in a safe manner.

What You Need to Know?

You Only Need 2 Things

Your 1 Rep Max

Periodization in the form of resistance training uses your 1 rep max (or maximum amount of weight you can lift 1 time) as bench mark to strategically change your workout. You can safely predict how much you can lift with the app calculator without risking injury.

Customize Your Workout

Selecting exercises and creating a workout based off the formula is a unique feature. Choosing between 3 cycle lengths: micro, meso, or macro, you can time when your body will be in peak condition for competing.

Making a complex process easy

Let's Break it Down

Using Epley's 1 rep max formula we can create a periodization workout routine.
How it works
1

Select Program.

Choose 1 of 2 periodization methods that you want to base your routine. You can also choose to opt out of a periodization routine.
2

Select Cycle.

Choose from 1 of the 3 different cycle lengths: microcycle, mesocycle, or macrocycle.
3

Select Exercises.

Select from a large library of exercises you wish to include in your personalized workout program.
4

Find 1 Rep Max.

By inserting the amount weight and reps, the app creates your entire periodization routine from the 1 rep max algorithm.

Demographics

Bodybuilders

Bodybuilders require periodization to prevent plateaus and time peak condition for competition.

Trainers

Personal trainers / coaches use periodization to safely increase exercise intensity for there clients.

Olympians

Athletes who train year round need periodization to prevent overtraining and ensure gradual progress.

Takeaways From This Project

Avoid the Swiss Army Knife Approach

At first I tried to design the app to do too many things. By narrowing my focus on doing just 2 things, I was able to create a better experience.

Perform a Thorough Competitive Analysis

I initially created wireframes before doing a thorough competitive analysis. A good competitive analysis saves time by seeing others tried and proven methods.
